The purpose of the works is upgrading the engineering infrastructure of the line within the stretch in question - part of the European railway corridor No. V within the scope of the AGC and AGTC treaties.

The Nové Mesto nad Váhom - Púchov double-track line splits within the Nové Mesto nad Váhom stretch to form two stages. Stage 1 consists of the Nové Mesto nad Váhom - Trenčianske Bohuslavice stretch, including a 1 755 m tunnel beneath the hill of Turecký kopec, while stage 2 comprises two railway stations, Trenčianske Bohuslavice and Melčice, and two inter-station stretches of Trenčianske Bohuslavice - Melčice - Zlatovce and the Kostolná-Zárečie railway stop. In the context of the project there will be two new railway bridges and six new road bridges, ten existing railway bridges will be refurbished and three passenger underpasses will be built at the railway stations plus there will be three such structures for the general public.
