Reconstruction of the former barracks - Kulturpark Košice2012-2013

In July 2013 the implementation of works in the action Reconstruction of the former barracks - Kulturpark Košice were completed. This Kulturpark is located in the Kukučínova street in Košice. The Cultural Center is the biggest investment in the project Košice - The European Capital of Culture for the year 2013. A new creative educational and relaxation district is functionally composed of three main buildings complemented by a few smaller creative, presentation and functional objects that are installed into the park area. The building consists of 32 objects all together and other 16 sub-objects. Thanks to an original concept of reconstruction for the former military barracks into a culture center the author of this solution was awarded Krištáľové krídlo 2013 (The Crystal Wing) in the category architecture. The total amount of work on this project comes up to a sum of more than 20 million €. This action was extremely hard to coordinate due to the massive amount of subcontracting companies and the deadline stress.

The barracks/Kulturpark are a modern type of cultural institution that provides opportunities for the creation and presentation of current culture and arts (music, visual arts, literature, film, theater and dance). It is a revitalization of a vast area and the creation of a new creative, educational and relaxation district for the city of Košice, not far from the historical city center.

The new cultural center barracks/Kulturpark is located in a historical area of the former barracks from the last decade of the 19th century. The proximity of the center and great accessibility by vehicle or on foot have predestined the transformation of the formerly very enclosed complex into a modern and public center of culture, the arts and social life. A clear organization, geometry, construction and proportioning of the buildings respecting the former objects and trees in the park reflects the strict nature of the military complex. The Kulturpark was officially opened on the 2nd of September 2013.
