D1 Motorway Fričovce – Svinia2011-2015

The main benefit of completion and opening the D1 motorway section Fričovce – Svinia to traffic for the drivers is the creation of continuous motorway route linking the towns of Ružomberok and Prešov with the length of about 140 kilometres. It is the second longest complete section on the D1 motorway. The construction of this motorway section was welcomed by the inhabitants of the municipalities affected (Fričovce, Bertotovce, Hendrichovce, Chmiňany, Chminianska Nová Ves and Svinia), because about 80 % of transit traffic passing just through the centre of these municipalities was diverted from the Class I road no. 18 (I/18), relieving them thus of heavy traffic. Compared to driving on the said Class I road the motorists will spare five minutes of time and the travel safety will be improved as well.

The completed section is 11,217 metres long, it was constructed in full profile and there are 15 bridges with the overall length of 2,259.64 metres located along the section. The longest bridge length is 323 metres, the height of the highest one is 38 metres. There are 3 noise barriers with the overall length of 5,407 metres located along the section. An interesting feature is also 28 kilometres of bored large-diameter piles. Of earthworks it is worth to mention 1.2 million m3 of excavations and 1.4 million m3 of embankments. There were 120,000 tons of asphalt laid in this section. The total motorway area is 295,250 m2.

The project was implemented by the consortium of construction companies named the “D1 Fričovce Consortium” which was formed by the companies Doprastav, JSC and STRABAG Ltd. The D1 motorway section Fričovce – Svinia starts at the interchange Fričovce and it ends at the interchange Svinia, where it connects to the D1 motorway section Svinia – Prešov West. The section start is in km 79.683 of the adjacent section D1 Fričovce Bypass and the end in km 90.900 at the interchange Svinia. The motorway is part of the main road network of the Slovak Republic and it is included in SR’s motorway and expressway network under the name D1. Its function is to provide for safe, high-capacity, high-speed road linking with the highest level of comfort (traffic flow fluency) while providing for the highest transportation function in the area with transregional function.

This D1 motorway section is also part of the transport corridor no. V, its modification in the Slovak Republic by the “A” branch, within the route Bratislava – Žilina – Košice – Uzhhorod (Ukraine), in conformity with the routes of European multimodal transport corridors, defined at the Pan-European conference on transport (Crete, 1994).
